Note

Sydney Thomas Houghton was the son of William Thomas Houghton from Ince near Wigan and Alice Barron, from Framwellgatemoor, near Durham. In 1901 Alice and her son lived in 12 Burleigh Street, her husband having died in 1899, aged 33. William Thomas was a miner and had also absconded, unsuccessfully, from the Durham Light Infantry in 1885 aged 18.
